Museum Visitor Shares Photos

Dear Franklin County Historical Society,

While at the Franklin County Fair a couple of weeks ago, I saw a nice display of some old service station pictures, so I have these from when my Dad ran the D-X station on the northeast corner of 3 & 65. He was at that location from 1939 until 1950, and then he moved across the street to the west and ran the Skelly station until 1954. The newspaper clippings were from when [he] took over the 1939 station and then in late 1941 or early 1942, the “Walnut Castle”, the big house in the background, was torn down and a new station was built and opened in March of 1942 at the same location.

Dear Franklin County Historical Society,

… I have now located the original pictures contained in the newspaper clippings that I previously sent, which I’m now enclosing.

  • All pictures were taken in 1939.
  • The gas station was located at the NE corner of Iowa 3 and US 65.
  • The “Walnut Castle” can be seen in the background.
  • My father: C.E. “Lefty” Donaldson, was the proprietor of the D-X station.
  • Also in the pictures is Robert “Bob” Kreiner
  • My dad is on the right in the picture of the car on the hoist.
  • My dad is on the left in the picture of the two of them in front of the station.
